Approval has been granted for the Betul-Khandwa four-lane highway project, which is expected to improve road connectivity across Madhya Pradesh. Betul-Khandwa Expressway To Reduce Travel Time Between Indore & Nagpur
According to reports by NDTV, the highway forms part of the broader Betul-Khandwa-Vadodara corridor. It is expected to strengthen road links between Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. The route will also improve access to major cities such as Nagpur, Jalgaon, Bhusawal, Akola, Washim, Hingoli and Nanded. In Gujarat, it will provide better connectivity towards Ahmedabad and Vadodara. The project is expected to benefit commuters as well as freight movement. It could also give a boost to trade and economic activity across the region.
The biggest benefit could be for travellers between Indore and Nagpur. According to central government project documents, the corridor will connect important transport and logistics hubs, including Indore Airport, Nagpur Airport, Indore’s Multi-Modal Logistics Park and railway stations in Betul and Khandwa.

Currently, the Indore-Nagpur journey can take around 13 to 14 hours, with large portions of the route passing through two-lane roads. The new four-lane corridor is expected to offer a faster alternative. The route will also connect major highways, including NH-47, NH-753 and NH-52, improving movement between Indore, Harda, Betul and Nagpur. Once operational, the upgraded road could bring the journey time down to around six hours.
Better Connectivity Across Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra & Gujarat
The project is expected to strengthen road connectivity across Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. In Madhya Pradesh, the corridor will improve links between Indore, Betul, Khandwa, Burhanpur and Barwani. In Maharashtra, it will provide better access to Nagpur, Jalgaon, Bhusawal, Akola, Washim, Hingoli and Nanded.
The route will also strengthen connectivity between Khandwa and major Gujarat cities, including Ahmedabad and Vadodara. This could make the movement of goods and passengers between the three states smoother.
Boost For Ujjain Simhastha 2028
The highway could also prove important during Ujjain Simhastha 2028, when Madhya Pradesh is expected to see a significant rise in pilgrim traffic. The improved road network will strengthen connectivity between Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga and Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga in Khandwa district. Pilgrims travelling from Maharashtra and Gujarat could also benefit from easier access to these major religious destinations.
