The road journey between Bhopal and Indore could soon become considerably shorter with the proposed construction of a new 160-km, six-lane greenfield expressway. Want to know more about the journey? Scroll down.

Indore-Bhopal Time Travel To Cut To 2 Hours

As per a report by NDTV, estimated to cost around ₹4,000 crore, the project will be constructed on a fresh alignment instead of widening the existing Bhopal-Indore route. Currently, travel time between the two Madhya Pradesh cities by road can take around four hours. Once the new expressway is completed and becomes operational, the journey could be cut down to approximately two to two-and-a-half hours.

Unlike the existing highway, the proposed corridor will be a six-lane, access-controlled road designed to offer seamless movement. Building it on a new highway will help avoid traffic congestion, intersections and slow-moving local traffic in towns along the existing route.

The approximately 160-km corridor will follow a more direct route between Bhopal and Indore, possibly making road travel between the two major cities faster and more convenient. Dewas and Sehore are also expected to benefit from improved connectivity.

New Expressway Could Connect To Wider Highway Network

According to the news reports, the upcoming Simhastha in Ujjain in 2028 is another key factor behind the push for the project. The religious event is anticipated to bring a significant rise in passenger movement across the region.

The Madhya Pradesh government is therefore looking to advance the project, with operational sections or the entire corridor targeted around 2028. The expressway could help manage the expected increase in traffic while boosting connections between important cities and economic centres.

The proposed Bhopal-Indore corridor could eventually become part of a larger high-speed road network across Madhya Pradesh. At the Indore end, the Garoth-Indore link is being developed to connect with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, potentially providing faster access towards Delhi and Mumbai.

The corridor is also expected to connect with the broader Narmada Expressway network around the Sehore-Dewas region. Another planned project, the 255-km Bhopal-Jabalpur greenfield expressway, aims to cut the journey between the two cities from around six hours to nearly three hours.

Looks like it’s good news for Bhopal-Indore people.
