Indian Railways has now updated the rules for the booking of Tatkal tickets. The changes, which will come into effect from August 1, are aimed at streamlining the booking process, reducing crowding at reservation counters and making the whole process a lot more convenient.
Indian Railways To Introduce A New Token System For Tatkal Tickets
Tatkal tickets are last-minute reservation quotas. This facility is provided by Indian Railways for passengers who urgently need to travel. But now, the officials have decided to change its booking rules from August 1, 2026. According to News18, a new token system will be introduced where passengers can collect a token during a fixed time slot and return at the allotted time to book their Tatkal ticket. This new system is aimed at reducing crowding, cutting down waiting time and making the whole booking process smoother.
The token timings will match the Tatkal booking hours. AC Tatkal tokens will be issued between 8:30 am and 9 am. On the other hand, non-AC Tatkal tokens will be available from 9 am to 9:30 am. Passengers who get a token can easily complete their booking in a single visit.

Here’s How The New Token System Will Work
According to News18, each reservation counter will initially issue just 10 tokens for AC Tatkal bookings and 15 tokens for non-AC bookings. However, these numbers can be increased or decreased depending on passenger demand and local requirements. If Tatkal seats remain available after all the tokens are served, the seats will be allotted to passengers on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Reportedly, the new system also gives priority to passengers booking tickets for their family members. Category A tokens will be reserved for family members, while Category B will be for other bookings. To get a Category A token, you will have to show your photo ID along with the valid photo ID of the family member. Keep in mind that tokens cannot be transferred from one person to another.
