Indians Can Make UPI Payments In Cambodia

As per a report by NDTV, Indian travellers will now be able to do UPI-related payments in Cambodia. The introduction of Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-enabled QR payments marks an important step in easing cross-border transactions, specifically for tourists used to cashless payments. With millions of Indian travellers heavily relying on digital payment systems, this step aims to boost convenience while promoting Cambodia’s tourism and retail sectors. The rise in standards also signals a greater push towards smooth financial access across borders. So travellers visiting Cambodia can now make QR-based payments at more than 4.5 million merchants across the country.

Right now, the scheme focuses on allowing Indian travellers to pay in Cambodia. The upcoming phase will expand the system into a fully bi-directional path. Additionally, Cambodian citizens travelling to India will soon be able to use their local banking and mobile payment apps to scan UPI QR codes across India.

UPI Reaches Another International Destination

If reports are to be believed, this major scheme is going to be super beneficial for Cambodians. This will help the Cambodian merchants, as the connection with UPI opens the door to a vast, digitally active Indian tourist base. Both local and large businesses are likely to profit from increased spending, faster transactions, and reduced dependency on cash handling.

Not only this, but the digital payments can also enhance operational effectiveness by reducing costs and allowing secure, real-time settlements, which are particularly beneficial for small and medium businesses.

With Cambodia becoming the 9th country to accept UPI payments, it’s super easy for Indian tourists to travel across these countries and manage payments. These include Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar and Sri Lanka.

The expansion also highlights India’s continuous efforts to position UPI as a global digital payments solution as well as making international travel more accessible for its citizens.
