Chennai’s public transport has now levelled up! The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has launched its first fleet of app-based premium electric buses in the city. These buses come with WiFi, cushioned seats, charging ports and several other facilities. Keep reading to know more about them in detail, including the fare!
Chennai’s Premium Electric MTC Bus Has WiFi!
These new premium buses in Chennai aim to encourage the public to use public transport instead of private vehicles for daily commuting. The golden-coloured buses are not regular city buses. They come with several advanced facilities. These AC electric buses feature cushioned seats, WiFi and individual charging ports at every seat. The images of the new buses were also posted by the official X account of Chennai One.
The best part? Passengers get guaranteed seats. According to a report by The Economic Times, the highlight of these buses is the “guaranteed seat” policy, which ensures that there are no standing passengers. This helps maintain a calm environment and a spacious cabin. Apart from this, the buses also come with GPS tracking, CCTV surveillance, panic buttons and a passenger information system.

Fares Start At ₹50
The first route, P570S, connects Siruseri IT Park directly to MGR Koyambedu Bus Terminus (CMBT). The second route, P91, links the coastal neighbourhood of Thiruvanmiyur to the newly inaugurated Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT).
These routes are designed to provide seamless connectivity between residential areas and major employment centres. The service is expected to expand to other routes in the future. According to The Economic Times, fares for these premium MTC buses range between ₹50 and ₹150. Passengers cannot book tickets on board. Travellers must reserve seats through the Chennai One app up to five days in advance.
The booking process is simple:
- Visit the Chennai One app
- Tap the ‘Premium Bus’ section
- Select the desired route and date
- Choose a seat from the layout
- Complete the payment, and your ticket is reserved
This 100% digital ticketing system aims to make operations easier and provide a predictable travel time for commuters.
