The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has successfully finished building the first national highway tunnel in Chhattisgarh, a noteworthy accomplishment for the state. Stretching 2.79 kilometres, this tunnel is a part of the Raipur–Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor, one of the most important infrastructure projects in the region. Officials confirmed on Sunday, October 5, that the left-hand side tunnel has been completed in just 12 months.

NHAI Completes Chhattisgarh’s First National Highway Tunnel

The tunnel passes beneath the hills along the border of Kanker and Kondagaon districts, close to Odisha. It is being built as a twin-tube tunnel, which means that two parallel tunnels will be used to control traffic in both directions. The left-hand side tunnel of this National Highway is now ready. However, work on the right-hand side tunnel is currently ongoing and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Traffic on the left tunnel is expected to begin by March-April 2026, followed by the right tunnel around July-August 2026.

As per the CNBC TV18 reports, once the 464-kilometre, six-lane NH-130CD highway is completed, it will significantly cut down on travel time between Raipur and Visakhapatnam. Also, this highway will improve connectivity, industry, and trade between Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. The locals can also expect shorter travel times, more efficient goods transportation, and more chances for tourism and economic expansion.

Historic Breakthrough For The State

Announcing the accomplishment on X (previously Twitter), NHAI wrote, “NHAI achieves breakthrough of Chhattisgarh’s first National Highway tunnel (Left Hand Side) in just 12 months! #NHAI achieved a key milestone with the successful breakthrough of 2.79 km long Left Hand Side Twin-Tube National Highway Tunnel of Raipur-Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor (NH-130CD).”

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai called the tunnel a historic step in Chhattisgarh’s journey towards growth and development. He said that strong roads and transport infrastructure are the backbone of a “prosperous and empowered Chhattisgarh.” He also thanked Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and the NHAI team, noting how the project reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat.

By building this tunnel, Chhattisgarh has improved its modern infrastructure, opening the door to faster, safer travel and stronger relations with its neighbours.
