The much-awaited 63-km-long Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is close to its completion and is likely to be inaugurated next month. This development promises a rapid reduction in travel time between the two cities. Read on to know more about it.
Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Nears Completion
As per a report by the Indian Express, the six-lane project will benefit daily commuters who often face congestion during peak hours on the current routes. The distance between Lucknow and Kanpur is around 90 km. The new expressway is said to reduce travel time to just 30 minutes. The expressway is beneficial to commuters, but one thing that is raising eyebrows is the proposed toll. An official told the portal that for cars, jeeps, vans and other light motor vehicles, a trip from Lucknow to Kanpur will cost ₹275. While a return journey within 24 hours will cost ₹415.

Currently, the toll costs ₹95 for a one-way trip between the two cities through NH-27. But after the inauguration of the new expressway, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is considering increasing the toll rate on NH-27.
Modern Features Of The Expressway
The new Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is built at a cost of ₹3,700 crore and spans 62.764 km and is divided into two packages: a 17.52-km stretch in the Lucknow district, largely elevated, and a 45.244-km greenfield stretch in the Unnao district. The modern expressway infrastructure includes one 10-km-long flyover in Lucknow with four major bridges and one railway overbridge. The expressway also features multiple underpasses, including 13 for light motor vehicles, 11 for vehicles, and 11 for pedestrians. The expressway also includes five toll plazas along the route.
As per the portal, the upcoming expressway is also equipped with an Advanced Traffic Management System, which can detect speed and automatically issue challans to vehicles crossing 120 km/hour.
The system includes 63 pan-tilt cameras, 21 interchange cameras, 16 video incident detection systems, and two control rooms located at the 27 km and 35 km points.
