The much-awaited passenger jetty and terminal near the Gateway of India (Radio Club), Mumbai, is now expected to become operational by August. The ₹229-crore project faced massive backlash from locals. However, both the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court have now given it a green light. Here’s what we know so far.
Passenger Jetty Coming Soon Near The Gateway Of India
Before we get into the details, let us first explain why Maharashtra is planning this passenger jetty. According to The Free Press Journal, the state government wants to boost tourism, improve maritime safety, and reduce traffic congestion in Colaba through this project. The entire initiative costs ₹229 crore. But yes, it has faced strong opposition from local residents and environmental activists.
Despite this, both the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court have cleared the project. A new passenger jetty and terminal will now come up near the Gateway of India (Radio Club). It is expected to become operational by August. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also directed officials to complete the project at the earliest.

Why Is A Jetty Needed In Mumbai
Now you may be wondering why Mumbai even needs a new passenger jetty. Reportedly, Alibaug in Raigad district is home to several bungalows owned by film stars, cricketers, and business personalities. These people often use the five existing jetties along the coast, which leads to heavy traffic congestion in South Mumbai. Around 30 to 35 lakh passengers use these jetties every year.
For over a decade, the state government has tried to build a modern jetty at this site. But local residents repeatedly opposed the move. Locals feared that the jetty could affect the historic Gateway of India and pose risks to maritime security. This delayed the project for years. Now, the project has been officially approved. Earlier, the jetty was scheduled to open in May 2026. However, it will now begin operations after the monsoon in August.
