Delhi Airport To Test Advanced Fog Forecasting Tech To Tackle Winter Flight Disruptions

Delhi Airport fog

While foggy winter mornings look dreamy to many, it also means delayed or cancelled flights for travellers, especially in Delhi! To tackle this yearly chaos, Delhi Airport is gearing up to test an advanced fog forecasting technology that can predict dense fog well in advance. This new system aims to help airlines and passengers plan better and reduce disruptions during the chilly months ahead.

Delhi Airport To Try Tech That Can Predict Dense Fog

According to Hindustan Times, live trials of advanced fog forecasting technology will soon begin at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi. Called the Winter Fog Experiment (WiFEX), this Indian field campaign is aimed at improving fog prediction over northern India, particularly the Indo-Gangetic plains. Developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, the project is a collaborative effort with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). WiFEX was first launched in 2015 to better understand the dynamics of winter fog and enhance aviation safety.

All You Need To Know About This

Under the WiFEX initiative, advanced sensors have been placed around the perimeter of Delhi’s Airport, the Hindustan Times reported. These sensors work alongside real-time weather data, field instruments, and high-resolution forecasting models to accurately predict when fog will form, how long it will linger, and when it will clear. This will help the Delhi Airport prepare for and manage dense winter fog more effectively.

The main WiFEX site uses a variety of instruments like lidars and ceilometers to measure fog height, radiometers and flux towers to track humidity and radiation, wind profilers, weather stations, and balloon sensors to monitor real-time changes in temperature, dew point, wind, and visibility. Delhi Airport authorities said that if the system works as planned, it will provide warnings of dense fog, helping airlines, air traffic control, and ground staff coordinate more effectively.
