Heavy Rainfall And Barrage Releases Behind The Surge

As per the same report, the Old Railway Bridge in Delhi serves as a key observation point to track the Yamuna River’s flow and potential flood risks. According to the advisory issued, a large quantity of water was released from Hathnikund Barrage on August 16. In addition to that, heavy rainfall in the upper Yamuna basin also resulted in the surge of the river’s water level.

An official from the Central Flood Room shared with India Today that the reason for the increase in the water level is mainly due to the high volumes of water released from the Wazirabad and Hathnikund barrages every hour. Both play a crucial role in water management and supply for different regions. Plus, water released from these barrages typically takes around 48-50 hours to reach Delhi. On Friday, the water level touched 204.65 metres at 1 pm before rising further on Saturday.
