Delhi kicked off December with an unexpected shiver, as icy winds swept through the city and pushed temperatures down to a biting 5.7°C on the first day of the month. This sudden chill felt more like late-December and early-January, catching morning commuters and early risers off guard. With the capital recording its coldest early-December morning in 15 years, the Delhi winter has clearly arrived early, and it’s only getting colder from here.
Coldest Start Of December In Over A Decade
According to NDTV, the sharp dip in temperatures is being driven by cold north-westerly winds sweeping into the region, causing an early and intense onset of the Delhi winter. On December 1, the capital recorded a minimum of 5.7°C, the lowest temperature for the first week of December since 2011, marking Delhi’s coldest December start in 15 years.
As per data shared by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), early December temperatures in Delhi are usually between 7°C and 11°C. In 2012, the city observed the lowest minimum temperature of 6.5°C on December 1. However, over the last few years, the temperature has hardly fallen below 8°C, making it the new normal part of Delhi winter.
Interestingly, Delhi’s cold streak has gone much lower in the past. The city’s all-time December minimum stands at a bone-chilling 0°C, recorded on December 27, 1930.

IMD Predicts Harsh Winter For Delhi This Season
The IMD has predicted that the Delhi winter will get much colder this year. There are chances of cold wave conditions in Delhi-NCR as well. This early December chill is an instance of the same. Typically, temperatures dip below 5°C after December 10 in Delhi.
For better understanding, last winter saw Delhi’s minimum temperature drop to 4.9°C on December 11, before dipping below the 5°C mark on December 15. In contrast, the winter of 2022 didn’t witness a sub-5°C temperature at all, with the lowest settling at exactly 5°C on December 25.
