Established in 1922, the Roshanara Club in Delhi has a storied legacy and has welcomed prominent leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr Rajendra Prasad, and Zakir Hussain. It is widely famous as the birthplace of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). However, after years of neglect had left it in a deteriorated state, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) stepped in to restore it to its former glory in 2023. The club underwent major renovation and restoration for almost two years and is now finally open to the public. Here’s all about the new changes.
Delhi’s Roshanara Club Undergoes Restoration
Spread across 22 acres of green space, Roshanara Club is an integral part of Delhi’s history. For almost 103 years, the club has hosted various political, administrative, social, and business gatherings and remained exclusive to its members. However, when DDA took over the premises on September 29, 2023, the club opened its doors to the public for the first time. And to give them the best of what the club has to offer, the authorities closed it for extensive renovation and restoration, which spanned nearly two years.
On Sunday, the iconic Roshanara Club in Delhi finally reopened, and the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi took to X to announce the news along with some pictures of the restored club premises. According to Hindustan Times, the club underwent extensive civil, electrical and aesthetic restoration.
Many indoor sports facilities were added and upgraded, and special care was given to restore the outdoor playing grounds as well. The lawn tennis courts in the club now have grass, clay, and synthetic play areas, while the cricket grounds, practice pitches, mini football and basketball zones were revamped.

As per reports, the revamped Roshanara Club has indoor amenities like a reception area, main lounge, card and billiards rooms, as well as a children’s play area. The DDA has also added a bar and dining hall, a banquet, a library, swimming pool with changing rooms, gym, squash court, badminton hall, yoga, sauna and steam area to the club.
While the focus has been on restoration, DDA has paid special attention to preserving the “Club’s architectural legacy.” From the club’s century-old façade and Mangalore-tiled roof to intricate wooden trusses, they have carefully restored it all. To maintain the club’s charm, they have also refurbished antique chandeliers and the original furnishings of the club.
