Did You Know Kerala Created A Wine Out Of Its Most Loved Jackfruit?

Jackfruit is one of the most popular fruits in Kerala. The fruit is widely grown in the state and is known for its delicious curry and chips. But guess what? It has now been given a new identity – jackfruit wine. Recently, a skilled winemaker from Kottarakkara has turned this unlikely vision into reality. Read to know more about the jackfruit wine.

All About The Jackfruit Wine

According to the Indian Express, Thomas P. O. is an internationally licensed winemaker who perfected this art while working in Vatican City. Talking to the portal, Thomas revealed that he saw the potential of preparing wine from jackfruit, and his effort is about to get a fruitful result, as he is soon going to sell the first batch of jackfruit wine to the Bevco outlets by April.

The Man Behind The Creation Of Jackfruit Wine

Sharing his story, Thomas revealed that after returning to Kerala from Europe, he started making non-alcoholic wine in 2019 without a license. Later, when the state government pitched the idea of promoting ‘horti-wine’ from local fruit varieties, he applied for a licence. In 2024, Thomas became the first person to obtain a licence to brew horti-wine. The government move was introduced to provide additional income to farmers and help them reduce agricultural waste.

Thomas has already made pineapple and grape wines hit the Bevco stands, and he is expecting the jackfruit one to be equally successful.

Talking to the news portal, Thomas revealed that jackfruit is still considered one of the most underrated fruits in the state despite its medicinal and nutritional value. He also offers ₹20 for a kg of jackfruit and has been procuring it on a large scale from farmers.

He revealed that a jackfruit can weigh up to 10 kg, and the farmer who sells it to him gets ₹200 for it, so it’s profitable for both parties. He also said that he does not differentiate between ‘varikka’ and ‘koozha’ varieties of jackfruit and uses both for brewing.

Thomas revealed that he plans to produce 10 more varieties of wine, made from mango to banana. But it all depends on the buzz created by the impending arrival of jackfruit wine.
