Kerala is a state known for its scenic landscapes, backwaters, and greenery all over. However, over the past few days, a new hidden gem has caught the internet’s attention. The viral clips show people walking and swimming on a flowing water bridge above a busy highway. But did you know the rise in tourists led the authorities to shut down the place? Read on to know why.

What Is The Chuvannamannu Aqueduct?

The viral water bridge that became quiet popular on the internet last week is the Chuvannamannu Aqueduct in the Thrissur district, Kerala. The place looks almost unreal and beautiful, with water flowing on a bridge. The unusual sight sparked curiosity among nearby residents and travellers. However, with the rise in tourists, authorities have now closed the site to the public for safety reasons.

As per a report by NDTV, the Chuvannamannu Aqueduct is not a tourist spot but a functional irrigation structure that carries canal water across the Thrissur-Palakkad highway. This canal is a part of the Peechi irrigation project, supporting agriculture in nearby villages. Built in the 1950s, the canal has been quietly serving the purpose of transporting water. The canal is not designed for recreational activity. The spot is gaining a lot of attraction, showing people standing and swimming through the flowing water above moving traffic. For many viewers, it appears to be a hidden gem, which is why, within a few days, the spot is filled with many visitors and tourists all across India.

Chuvannamannu Aqueduct Closed To The Public

The sudden attraction around the Chuvannamannu Aqueduct has raised serious safety concerns, leading the authorities to close the place for public access. The lack of safety railings, extremely narrow pathways, and the primary function of the Chuvannamannu Aqueduct as an active irrigation channel restrict access to the top.
