Travelling abroad has its perks and consequences, but one of the important aspects is to understand local laws that may vary from country to country. One such destination is Thailand, which is renowned for its scenic views, nightlife, and stunning tropical islands. But do you know Thailand, one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, has a strict rule that, if broken, can land you straight in jail? Read on to know more about it.

E-Cigarettes & Vapes Are Illegal In Thailand

As per a report by NDTV, the official advisories issued by the Embassy of Thailand state that electronic cigarettes, also called e-cigarettes or vapes, are illegal in the country. Despite their use in other parts of the world, visitors to Thailand can face hefty fines, arrests, or even imprisonment for carrying or using these devices. The Embassy of Thailand has banned the consumption, possession, import, and use of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices in the country. This includes all related items, like vape pens, e-liquids, cartridges, and accessories.

Smoking In Thailand Can Lead To Serious Penalties

Anyone found violating the ban may face various penalties, including imprisonment or fines twice the value of the confiscated items. The law applies equally to both Thai citizens and foreign nationals. According to the New York Post, Thai authorities recently fined two British tourists for vaping on a beach. The couple had to pay the heavy sum of ₹1,15,382 to get a release from the local police station. Police officials warned the tourists that repeated offences could mean five years in prison.

Many tourists have raised questions about the ban on vaping and e-cigarettes in Thailand, according to the news portal. The Thai government introduced the ban in 2014, and a government spokesperson previously stated that authorities were concerned that electronic cigarettes were promoting younger people to take up smoking. The ban was implemented as a preventive measure to prohibit smoking. The Embassy has advised all travellers not to carry vaping-related equipment to Thailand.
