Cleanliness drivers not only keep our surroundings clean but also help preserve the beauty of our country. That’s why anti-litter campaigns like the Swachh Bharat Mission were launched. Now, a Bengaluru-based doctor-turned-activist is going viral for her efforts in maintaining cleanliness in public spaces. She has even earned praise from billionaire entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.
Bengaluru Doctor Turned Activist Launches Anti-Litter Campaign
A video posted by @Mahaveer_VJ is now going viral on X. In the clip, a woman can be seen instructing BMTC passengers not to throw tickets, wrappers or Pan Parag packets on the roads. She first relays the message in Kannada and then repeats it in Hindi to ensure commuters understand her message. She is even seen folding her hands and requesting everyone to take personal responsibility for keeping the country clean. The activist also urges citizens to take responsibility for their own garbage instead of simply discarding it.
Her message in the viral video caught the eye of Indian entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, who reposted the clip and wrote, “What a responsible woman. She is more educated than our rich literati!” You would like to know that the woman in the video is not just any woman. She is Dr Shanthi Tummala, a dentist turned environmentalist who leads a mission with the HSR Citizen Forum. Dr Shanthi replied to Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw’s repost, thanking her for the appreciation.
Dr Shanthi said, “Thank you, Madam. A doctor by profession feels sustainability is most important. Prevention is better than a cure. If the environment and soil are healthy, then humans alone can survive. Thank you for sharing it. Have a lot of ideas, enthusiasm and Passion to bring the change.” Her dedication to keeping the environment clean is truly something everyone could learn from.
Netizens Praise Her Efforts
The video not only went viral but also received praise from many on social media. One user wrote, “We should salute the lady for taking the initiative to bring awareness to people about a clean city.” Another commented, “This is Namma Bengaluru’s @TummalaShanthi, a passionate citizen warrior of Bengaluru!”
A few others pointed out that people should stop insulting Mother Earth by littering and must dispose of waste properly in dustbins. Some even suggested imposing fines on those who throw garbage on roads.
This is not the first time Dr Shanthi Tummala has urged people to maintain cleanliness. Her social media posts show her regularly participating in various cleanliness drives. In one post, she was even seen urging the government to enforce the ban on gutka, citing the mess it creates on roads.
