Alphonso mangoes, known as the ‘king of mangoes’, are quite expensive. But this variety enjoys huge popularity due to its rich aromatic sweetness and creamy texture. But apparently, many traders in Mumbai have now started selling similar-looking mangoes in the markets at the same price, raising concerns among people. Here are simple ways you can spot the real Hapus (Alphonso) from the fake ones. Trust us, this information will come in handy if you like indulging in these expensive mangoes.
Mumbai Markets See Fake Alphonso Mangoes
According to a report by Mid-Day, Mumbai’s Hapus mango season has taken a hit. Unseasonal rain and pest attacks have destroyed 60-70% of Alphonso mangoes from the Konkan belt. This has significantly impacted the city’s mango market, where there is high demand for these sweet, aromatic mangoes.
To meet high demand, many traders in Mumbai markets are now selling lookalike Alphonso (Hapus) varieties from Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. These are not the original Alphonso mangoes from Ratnagiri and Devgad. In short, they are fake Alphonsos. According to Mid-Day, real Alphonso mangoes can cost ₹3000-9000 per dozen, while fake ones are sold for ₹1200-1500 per dozen. There are simple checks you can carry out, like smelling the fruit, checking its skin, and looking at its rich saffron colour.

How To Identify Real Konkan Alphonso Mango
Here are some easy ways to identify a real Konkan hapus mango:
- A genuine Konkan hapus has a strong natural aroma that you can smell even from a distance. It can fill the whole room with its fragrance.
- A naturally ripened Alphonso mango has a golden yellow hue with a subtle red blush on top. It may also have slightly yellowish-green skin.
- Authentic Konkan mangoes are oval or oblong in shape. They are not perfectly round.
- The flesh inside is rich saffron, golden or deep orange in colour. The pulp is buttery soft and fibreless.
On the other hand, fake ones have thicker skin. They are firmer, and their bite tastes more fibrous rather than creamy. Their fragrance is also not so strong and aromatic.
Reportedly, retailers in Crawford Market and Colaba are stocking these similar-looking mangoes to meet high demand. The original Devgad Hapus variety is scarce for buyers. So, if you are out to buy Alphonso mangoes in Mumbai, make sure you check the skin and colour before buying.
