Indian Railways is all set to boost travel in the country. They have now approved two next-generation trains with a design speed of 220 kmph. These trainsets will be much faster than the Vande Bharat Express, which runs at a speed of 180 kmph. Here is everything you need to know about these new trains in India.

Indian Railways Plans Trains With 220 Kmph Design Speed

According to India.com, these new trains, expected to be faster than Vande Bharat Express, will strengthen rail connectivity across the country. They will also be more efficient. Indian Railways is planning to introduce these trains with several modern features for passengers. This will raise the bar of comfort and onboard technology.

Reportedly, the Railway Board has officially approved the production of these trains under the Coach Production Programme for the 2027-28 period. Their manufacturing will take place at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. Currently, Vande Bharat Express is Indian Railways’ fastest operational train with a speed design of 180 kmph.

16-Coach Trainsets With Modern Features

Each of these trains will have 16 coaches and will be built as broad-gauge trainsets. The design speed will be 220 kmph, with an expected operational speed of 200 kmph. According to India.com, these trains will feature upgraded design and passenger amenities like steel-bodied coaches, fully air-conditioned chair car configuration, and ergonomic reclining seats. Initially, each train will be built with eight coaches, with full-scale expansion planned later.

Each coach will cost around  ₹27.86 crore, taking the whole contract cost to ₹866.87 crore. The modern features in these trains will deliver a more comfortable travel experience while operating at higher speeds. The plan is still in its initial stages, but it will definitely take Indian Railways to a whole new level. And we are definitely excited.
