These graceful migratory birds have returned to the region’s wetlands, creating a breathtaking sight for nature lovers and photographers alike. Their annual visit not only adds colour to the landscape but also signals the start of the migratory season in southern India.
     
Hundreds Of Flamingos Spotted In Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu
According to Moneycontrol, thousands of flamingos have arrived in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi ahead of the winter season, turning the wetlands a vibrant pink. Flamingos make an annual journey from Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and northern Sri Lanka to arrive at Tamil Nadu’s southern coast. During the winter months, they feed on algae, small crustaceans, and plankton, which gives them their distinctive pink hue.
Thoothukudi offers a unique ecosystem for flamingos, including salt pans and shallow lagoons that provide ideal habitat for these migratory visitors. Every year, thousands of birdwatchers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts flock to Thoothukudi to witness this spectacular natural phenomenon.

Healthy Ecosystem In The State
According to wildlife experts, Thoothukudi’s unique coastal ecosystem features calm weather, algae-filled waters, and nutrient-rich lagoons. The algae and microorganisms offer balanced nourishment, making it an ideal feeding and resting ground. This is why hundreds of flamingos flock to the coast at the onset of winter. Experts also believe that the flamingos’ annual visit is a positive indicator of ecological balance.
     
This annual visit of flamingos to Thoothukudi has also helped boost tourism in the region. Many photographers, nature enthusiasts, and researchers visit the place between October and March. Meanwhile, the Tirunelveli district also welcomes various migratory birds during this time of year.
