Gurgaon Floods: IMD Issues Orange Alert, Roads Waterlogged, Chaos At Sikanderpur Metro Station

Gurgaon Floods

The Indian Meteorological Department has now issued an orange alert in Gurgaon. Incessant rain has wreaked havoc in many districts, causing a flood-like situation. Roads are waterlogged, and traffic has been badly hit in both Gurgaon and its neighbouring areas. Here are the latest updates on the situation.

Gurgaon Under Orange Alert Amid Flood-Like Conditions

North India has been under a spell of heavy rainfall for days. In Gurgaon, heavy showers have led to waterlogging on several roads, leading to massive traffic jams. As per a report by India TV, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the city. Schools and offices were also shut for the day, with authorities urging them to opt for online classes and work from home until the situation improves. Many people took to X to share visuals of traffic snarls on the flooded stretches. One user, @YashMor5, uploaded a video on his X account showing the visuals of the traffic on Gurgaon roads.

Large volumes of water were released from the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana, further raising the risk in low-lying parts of the capital. Floodwater also entered several houses in the Delhi-NCR region after the Yamuna River crossed the danger mark following overnight rainfall. The rising water level caused significant traffic congestion at the Delhi-Gurgaon border.

Downpour Causes Chaos At Sikanderpur Metro Station

According to the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), over 100 mm of rainfall was recorded between 3 pm and 7 pm on September 1 in the Delhi-NCR region. The downpour triggered severe waterlogging at key junctions, including IFFCO Chowk, Rajiv Chowk and Sohna Road. Traffic also crawled along National Highway-48 with cars, trucks and two-wheelers stuck for hours.

Hours of continuous rainfall not only flooded several parts of Gurgaon but also brought chaos to the Sikanderpur Metro Station, a key interchange point. A viral video shared by @joedelhi showed people cramped together in a stampede-like situation. Commuters also pointed out that travelling between Delhi and Gurgaon has become increasingly difficult during the heavy downpour.

The IMD has forecast cloudy skies with light to moderate rain for Delhi-NCR between September 2 and 4. The capital also faced disruptions in flight operations due to waterlogging, road traffic and low visibility. As per NDTV, amid flood concerns, CM Rekha Gupta urged people not to panic, stating that water reaching the Yamuna floodplain is natural as it forms part of the river’s ecological system.
