A Swiggy user nearly fell victim to a delivery scam after being asked to share an OTP without actually receiving her food. She recounted her experience on Reddit, explaining how the delivery agent tried to con her. Here’s more on the incident.
Swiggy User Nearly Falls Victim To Delivery Scam
Sharing OTPs to receive parcels is quite common. But we should also be aware that sometimes giving them out blindly can lead to scams. A Swiggy user recently went through a similar incident. She took to Reddit to explain how a food delivery agent tried to scam her by lying to both her and Swiggy customer care. You can check the post by u/sad-_-life here.
Narrating the incident, she said that just like any other day, she had ordered food from Taco Bell when the restaurant called her and said the delivery guy was refusing to pick up the order. She decided not to cancel the order, assuming it would either get reassigned to a new rider or automatically cancelled. But about 1.5 hours later, she received a notification saying her order had arrived at her doorstep.
The delivery agent showed up without the food and asked for the OTP. She refused, but the delivery agent claimed that Swiggy needed the OTP to assign a new rider to deliver the food. This was strange, as no delivery agent would ask for an OTP without actually delivering the order, right?
The Truth Behind The Delivery Scam Attempt
She later contacted Swiggy and found out that the delivery agent had lied to them, claiming he was involved in an accident and that the food had spilt on the way. This shocked her even more, as she realised the delivery guy had simply planned to scam her. She also added, “I’m so used to giving OTPs over the phone for packages (Bluedart, Xpressbees, etc.) when I’m working from the office that I almost gave it out this time too”
Many users came forward with their comments. One said, “Yeah, there’s always some bad actors like this in any system. You were smart to not give the OTP over the phone.”, while another added, “Same thing happened to me once. The guy was saying that he isn’t able to see the address on the map and needs otp. I called the support and complained. ”
Her awareness helped her avoid falling for the scam. But it’s true, sharing OTPs blindly is never a good idea. Have you ever experienced something like this?
