Delhi is seeing a sharp rise in H1N1 cases, with the Capital recording more than 1,700 infections so far in 2026. With the numbers climbing, the Union Health Ministry has issued guidance on the symptoms people should watch out for and the precautions that can help reduce the spread. Here’s all you need to know about this.

H1N1 Cases Rise In Delhi

H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, is a strain of seasonal influenza. Health experts have also noted an increase in other respiratory infections across Delhi-NCR amid the ongoing humid and fluctuating weather conditions. According to The Times of India, H1N1 can initially look like a regular flu, which can make it difficult to distinguish from other seasonal respiratory infections.

Common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills and fatigue. Some people may also experience other flu-like symptoms. The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) also lists symptoms such as headache, malaise, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea among possible clinical manifestations of influenza.

Doctors have linked the recent rise in influenza activity to the ongoing seasonal conditions, with humid and fluctuating weather creating favourable circumstances for the spread of respiratory infections. Delhi is also seeing cases of H3N2 and other viral illnesses alongside H1N1.

However, doctors have stressed that the current increase should not be mistaken for a new pandemic. H1N1 has become one of the seasonal influenza strains circulating among people.

When Should You Be More Careful?

While many influenza infections may be mild, severe illness can occur, particularly among vulnerable groups.

Difficulty in breathing is one of the warning signs that should not be ignored. People who develop worsening symptoms or breathing difficulties should seek medical attention rather than attempting to manage the illness on their own.

The NCDC identifies young children, older adults, pregnant women and people with certain underlying health conditions or compromised immunity as groups at higher risk of severe influenza.

Health authorities are urging people to follow basic respiratory hygiene and take precautions, particularly if they develop flu-like symptoms.

Some key measures include:

1. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water.
2. Wear a mask in crowded places, especially during periods of increased respiratory illness.
3. Avoid close contact with unwell people.
4. If you develop flu-like symptoms, stay home and limit contact with others where possible.
5. Seek medical advice if symptoms become severe or you have difficulty breathing.

While there is no reason to panic, make sure you don’t ignore persistent flu-like symptoms, especially if they worsen or are accompanied by breathing difficulties.
