As part of India’s big cat conservation programme, a tigress was recently airlifted by an IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter from Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh to Rajasthan’s Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve. The task was accomplished through detailed planning and collective efforts by the authorities. Here’s more on this.

Tigress Airlifted From Pench Tiger Reserve To Ramgarh Vishdhari

India is leaving no stone unturned when it comes to the conservation of big cats. On December 21, in an amazing display of civil-military cooperation, a tigress was translocated from Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh to Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan. The tigress was airlifted using an Indian Air Force Mi-17V5 helicopter. The update was shared by @CAC_CPRO on their official X account. According to the post, the task was crucial and was completed through detailed planning and coordinated efforts.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the IAF’s MCC worked closely to ensure the operation was successful. This translocation is part of a larger big cat relocation project. Moreover, around 15 tigresses are expected to be transferred from Madhya Pradesh to various states to strengthen India’s tiger conservation efforts.

First-Ever Inter-State Aerial Translocation Of A Big Cat

According to a report by Hindustan Times, this marked the first-ever inter-state aerial translocation of a big cat in India. The move aims to boost tiger numbers and improve genetic diversity in Rajasthan’s tiger reserves. Reportedly, the tigress is three years old and has been identified as PN-224. She arrived at Jaipur airport on Monday morning at around 10:30 am and was later transported by road to Ramgarh Vishdhari under tight security.

The tigress has been placed in the Bajalia enclosure and is adjusting well to the new habitat. Furthermore, Deputy Conservator of Forest at Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve, Arun Kumar D, shared with Hindustan Times that the tigress is in good health and is showing normal behaviour.

She will remain in the enclosure for about a week before being released into the wild. This will help her adapt to the local climate and prey availability, making it easier for her to navigate the forest once released. Veterinary teams and forest staff are closely monitoring her movements.
