India Ranks 3rd In Asia’s Sustainable Travel Rankings; THIS Country Tops The List!

Recently, Agoda released its 2026 Sustainable Travel Survey, which revealed that 88% of Indian travellers consider sustainability an important factor when choosing travel options. The survey ranked India third in Asia for prioritising sustainable travel. Read on to know more about this and who topped the list.

India Ranks Third In Sustainable Travel Survey

Agoda’s 2026 Sustainable Travel Survey highlights that sustainability is becoming an important factor in how Asian travellers plan their trips. Leading the region, Thailand tops the list at 95%, followed by Indonesia (93%), India (88%), Malaysia (88%), and Taiwan (83%).

The survey, which engaged respondents across eight Asian markets, captured changing expectations across the region, where travellers increasingly link sustainability not only to environmental responsibility but also to outcomes that strengthen local communities and protect the destinations they love.

Motive & Benefits Behind Sustainable Travel

Around 39% of respondents said the most important outcome was ensuring travel spend benefits local communities. Next, 33% believe protecting nature and wildlife was the most important, while 16% focused on building a deeper connection with the destination. This shows that travellers view sustainable travel less as an environmental idea and more as travel that has a meaningful purpose.

Why Do Travellers Want More Sustainable Experiences?

Travellers from both India and Thailand are drawn to experiences that combine enjoyment with a positive impact. As per the survey, they wanted to indulge in tourism that protects the environment and supports local communities.

Indian travellers believe that tourism’s most meaningful impact lies in strengthening local economies. More than half, 53%, said that the biggest benefit of responsibly managed tourism is driving economic growth for local businesses, while 16% believe in its role in supporting the preservation of local cultures and traditions.

Thailand Leads The List

Thailand emerged as the most sustainability-focused country, with 95% of travellers saying that it matters in their travel choice in 2026. This shows that the concept of sustainable travel is evolving, it’s no longer just about protecting nature, but also about personal and meaningful experiences.
