Indian Railways is all set to boost food safety. They have now decided to introduce QR-based identity cards and digitally traceable food packets to prevent unauthorised vending operations at Indian railway stations. This will ensure that all passengers get safe and hygienic meals during their journey. Here’s how this system will work.

Indian Railways Introduces QR-Based ID Cards And Food

Indian Railways is now using a digital-based system to improve passenger safety and food quality during the journey. Recently, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made an important announcement stating that the ministry has successfully integrated QR code-enabled identity cards and digitally traceable food packets across its network. This new system by IRCTC will prevent unauthorised hawkers from serving meals onboard. It will ensure that all food for passengers meets strict verification standards.

According to Mathrubhumi, the government has made it mandatory that all staff, including helpers and vendors, must carry QR code-based ID cards. By simply scanning the code on these cards, authorities and passengers can instantly check the vendor’s name, Aadhaar number, medical fitness certificate, and police verification status. This will ensure that only authorised staff work onboard.

QR Codes On Food Packets To Show Base Kitchen Name

Reportedly, this system will apply to food as well. All food packets will now come with a QR code that provides real-time information to passengers. By scanning this code, a customer can easily check the name of the base kitchen where the meal was prepared and the date of manufacturing. This transparency will make it easier for authorities to hold caterers responsible for any hygiene-related issues. According to NDTV Profit, these new rules will help eliminate problems related to unhygienic and expired supplies of food.

Moreover, new advanced kitchens will be established in selected locations with CCTV surveillance. To further enhance the quality of meals, popular brands of cooking oil, atta, rice, pulses, masala, paneer, and dairy products will be used.
