Delhi weather

India is currently reeling under an intense heatwave, affecting North, Central and Eastern India. Many people are now staying indoors, which is why the use of cooling devices like air conditioners and coolers has significantly increased. The peak electricity demand in India recently reached a record high of 256.11 GW due to the changing weather patterns. Doctors have also issued warnings amid rising heat in Delhi.

India’s Power Demand Hits Record High Amid Changing Weather

Recently, India’s peak power demand surged to an all-time high of 256 GW across the northwest and central regions. The rising heat and unbearable summers are driving the use of cooling appliances at homes, offices and other spaces. According to India.com, officials have stated that the nation’s power generation capacity is sufficient to meet this demand, which has eliminated the need for power cuts. But yes, the demand for electricity is expected to rise even more.

The Ministry of Power is expecting the demand to reach 270 GW in the coming days. The peak demand for electricity in India is usually seen during May–June, but this year, the early onset of summer has led to a sudden rise. It is expected to continue as the heatwave becomes more intense with rising temperatures. Not just Delhi, but regions like Bihar, Odisha and West Bengal are also reeling under the changing weather patterns.

Delhi-NCR Doctors Warn Residents

Temperatures in several regions have increased by 5°C or more above normal levels. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings regarding severe conditions across the country. Temperatures in New Delhi are soaring up to 47°C, and it is becoming increasingly difficult for people to step out. According to Times Now, Dr L Shyam Singh, Director of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences, has also warned Delhi residents.

As soon as you feel feverish, uneasy, dizzy or uncomfortable, you should immediately start cooling your body and take rest. Delhi-NCR doctors are also warning people not to ignore headaches, cramps or even mild uneasiness, because what starts as pain can quickly turn into exhaustion during a heatwave. You should know that during intense heat, the body works harder and sweats more. With that, it loses not just water but also sodium and potassium. If these are not replenished, it leads to dehydration and fatigue. This is why you should stay hydrated at all times. Delhi-NCR doctors have advised residents to visit hospitals if they experience continued headaches, dizziness and discomfort.
