In a move that could soon rewrite India’s constitutional map, the Union Cabinet is likely to take up a proposal to officially rename Kerala as Keralam. Reports suggest that the decision may be considered at the Cabinet meeting, marking a key moment in the southern state’s long-standing demand to reflect its original Malayalam name in official records.

Kerala May Soon Be Called Keralam

The demand is simple in wording but significant in meaning: change the name of the state from “Kerala” to “Keralam” in the Constitution and across all official government documents. According to Money Control, the Kerala Legislative Assembly has already passed a resolution requesting this change. Actually, the proposal was approved twice by the Assembly.

In 2024, the first resolution was approved. However, the state government made changes to the draft after the Union Home Ministry examined it and recommended some technical fixes. The revised resolution was then once more approved by the Assembly on June 25, 2024. With the state’s part completed, the matter now rests with the Centre.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan strongly backed the move when he introduced the resolution in 2024. He explained that in Malayalam, the region has always been called “Keralam,” Money Control reported. Through the resolution, the Assembly requested the Centre to amend the Constitution under Article 3 so that the state’s name appears as “Keralam” in all languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

Centre Set To Consider Assembly’s Resolution

If the Union Cabinet approves the proposal, the Centre will have to bring a Constitutional amendment in Parliament. After it was approved, “Keralam” would formally take the place of “Kerala” in the Constitution’s First Schedule and all central government documents. The suggested name change may have cultural and emotional significance as elections draw near.

Even though official confirmation is still pending, the possibility of Kerala becoming “Keralam” has already sparked conversations in political and public circles, according to Money Control. If accepted, this modification would represent a symbolic change, officially acknowledging the name that resonates in the Malayalam language, history, and the hearts of its people.

The Union Cabinet’s decision is currently the centre of attention, and it could soon lead to the inclusion of “Keralam” in the Indian Constitution.
