Recently, a new video of a new mural location in Kolkata has been going viral on Instagram. In the video, a 5,000 sq ft wall painting has turned into a stretch along Basanta Lal Saha Road near Tollygunge into the city’s photo hotspot. Read on to know more about the viral artistic wall.
Man Behind Kolkata’s Visual Street Art
As per a report by The Telegraph India, the mural has been attracting crowds from across Kolkata, all thanks to the visual arts that are making the city even more beautiful. Behind it is Sayan Mukherjee, the person who transformed Ballygunge’s Deodar Street into a colourful road and gave Kolkata the vibrant and colourful Durga Puja trams and taxis.
Talking to the news portal, he said his journey into art began at home, where his grandfather, a painter, inspired him. He said from the very beginning, from his childhood days, he used to see him paint. But he never thought that he would take up art as a career.
His Journey, Story Behind Art & More
He then started working full-time jobs, and then he continued his parallel practice in illustration, book covers and graphic storytelling. From advertisements and book illustrations, Sayan Mukherjee ventured into street art with murals at Eden Gardens. He stated that he got an offer to do the mural for Eden Gardens, to which he agreed. Today, his arts are landmarks across the city, from the Colour Corridor at Deodar Street to work across New Town, Barrackpore and beyond the state. His art has been all over social media; his work has gone viral multiple times.
His recent project on the boundary wall of the new 5,000 square feet stretch, Bhyawanipore Global Campus, has gained a lot of views online. Built around the concept of the left and right brain, the scene portrays both technical disciplines and creative imagination.
Back in 2025, during Durga Puja, he also brought his storytelling to Kolkata’s iconic yellow trams and taxis as a part of a special project. Through his art, he highlighted the evolving third decade of Kolkata taxis, capturing cultural shifts.
