Kuno National Park’s Aasha Gives Birth To 5 Cubs; Cheetah Population In India Rises To 35

Wildlife lovers, there is delightful news for you all! A Namibian cheetah named Aasha has become a mother for the second time. She recently gave birth to five cubs in her second litter at Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park. The good news is that with this new litter, the total cheetah population in India now stands at 35! Cheetah Gives Birth To 5 Cubs At Kuno National Park

Union Forest Minister Bhupender Yadav recently shared good news that will make animal lovers smile. A Namibian cheetah gave birth to five adorable cubs on February 7, 2026, at Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh.  Aasha has now become a second-time mother. Both the mother and the cubs are in good health. But most importantly, this news is being seen as a major boost for India’s Project Cheetah.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, with this fresh litter, the total number of cheetahs in India has now reached 32. Out of these, 24 were born in India. Moreover, the population is set to rise further. Five female and three male cheetahs will be translocated from Botswana to Kuno National Park by February 28.

Why This Is A Milestone For India

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav also mentioned in his X post that this new litter is a “significant milestone” in India’s cheetah conservation journey. He also wrote, “undertaken and nurtured under the environmentally-conscious leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi ji.” Union Minister Bhupender Yadav also appreciated the dedication, skill and commitment of the field staff and veterinarians who are working tirelessly to increase the number of cheetahs in India.

According to The Times of India, Project Cheetah is extremely important for the country. It is the world’s first intercontinental large carnivore translocation programme. It was launched on September 17, 2022, with the aim of reintroducing the beautiful and mysterious cheetah to India, where they became extinct in 1952.
