The Mumbai-Pune expressway is said to be one of the most beautiful highways in India. But the expressway also witnesses heavy traffic congestion on a daily basis. To address this long-standing issue, the central government has taken an important step by planning a new highway between the two cities. Read on to know more about this project.
The New Mumbai-Pune Expressway
The new expressway between Mumbai and Pune is expected to reduce traffic pressures on the existing routes and make travel easy for daily commuters. According to a report by News18, the proposed project is being called the third highway between Mumbai and Pune. If reports are to be believed, the tender process for the project is already completed, and the construction work is expected to begin next month after the inaugural ceremony.
What Is The Reason Behind The Third Mumbai-Pune Expressway?
The project will be completed in phases. In the first phase, the highway will be built from Pagote near Atal Setu to Chowk close to Karjat. This section will serve as an important starting point for the new corridor and will help in traffic distribution. The second phase will run from Chowk near Karjat to Shivare near Khed Shivapur. The approval for the same has been granted, and the construction is to begin soon.

According to a report by News18, the decision to build a new route between Mumbai and Pune is because both the existing motorways experience frequent traffic, particularly during weekends, holidays and peak travel hours. With an increase in vehicles to and from the cities, the authorities felt the need for an additional high-capacity corridor to handle traffic congestion better.
Eight Lanes, Tunnels & Flyovers
The expressway will initially be built as an eight-lane highway, but the design allows for future expansion up to sixteen lanes. Not only this, but a completely new route is being planned between Lonavala and Khopoli, which will feature tunnels and flyovers to make travel easy and smooth. As per the reports, the expressway from Lonavala will pass through the scenic Pavana Valley, continue via Mulshi and reach Khed Shivapur.
