Grocery shopping at retail chains has made life easier. From skincare to daily essentials, everything is available under one roof. But the experience is not always great. Recently, a man accused SMART Bazaar of selling expired paneer, curd and other dairy products and “playing with people’s health.” Here’s what happened.
Expired Paneer Being Sold At Low Prices
There was a time when groceries came fresh from dairy shops and local vegetable vendors. With the rise of retail chains, people now buy bread, paneer, curd, milk, fruits and vegetables from the same store. It saves time, but it also has its drawbacks. One X user, Ravi Maheshwari, claimed to have faced such an issue while shopping at a SMART Bazaar store, owned by Reliance.
According to the post, Ravi found paneer, curd and other dairy products that were already expired. He shared images of the products on X and raised concerns about food safety. What shocked many was the pricing. The user claimed that expired paneer was being sold for as low as ₹15. The caption of the post read, “Hey @SMARTBazaarIn, how can you play with people’s health? Just to earn ₹15, you are selling EXPIRED paneer, curd and other dairy items. @fssaiindia, this is a clear food safety violation under the FSS Act, 2006 – strict action must be taken.

Video Raises Food Safety Concerns
Ravi also shared a video recorded inside a SMART Bazaar store in Pune on January 4. In the clip, he showed at least five brands of paneer with an MRP of over ₹100 being sold at heavily discounted prices, despite being expired. The X user highlighted that this was a clear food safety violation and questioned why no action was being taken.
Naturally, the post sparked anger online. One user commented, “Damn !!! Did they actually deliver expired products in the name of a 90% discount? This is not done.” Another wrote, “It’s fairly common with them. I have also experienced it many times with reliance. Always check the expiry date before buying.”
SMART Bazaar also responded to the complaint in the comments. They wrote, “Hi Ravi, this is not the experience we intended for you. Please kindly share the complete store address with PIN along with your contact number, email ID and a copy of the bill with header via DM, so that we can raise your complaint with our team.”
