Football and Messi fans, this news might dishearten you a little. Lionel Messi’s upcoming visit to Kochi is currently in doubt, with last year’s controversy sparking fresh concerns. The GOAT was expected to travel to Kerala in March for an international friendly match. However, there is still no official confirmation from the event’s sponsor. Here’s why.
Messi Was Expected To Visit Kochi In March
This update comes after Messi’s visit last year to Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi, where the Kolkata event turned chaotic. Fans complained about poor management. Now, his March visit to Kochi, Kerala, also hangs in uncertainty. According to a report by The Hindu, doubts have surfaced over the visit of the World Cup-winning Argentina team, led by Lionel Messi.
The event’s sponsor, Reporter Broadcasting Corporation (RBC), has not guaranteed whether the team will visit in March. Reportedly, the international friendly was originally scheduled for November 25, 2025, but it was called off. Anto Augustine, Managing Director of RBC, shared with The Hindu that the organisation is not in a position to officially confirm the visit yet. This is despite having an agreement with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) for the team’s arrival in Kochi.

Dates Keep Shifting
The proposed visit dates have shifted multiple times, from October to November, and now to March. However, fans can expect another announcement by January 31 regarding the visit. According to The Hindu, the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has also faced criticism for allotting the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium to a private party for hosting the match. The authority allegedly did not follow due process, and clarity on whether the event will take place remains missing.
Reports also say that GCDA has stated most renovation work is complete, except for resurfacing the parking lot and finishing a short stretch of the compound wall. Floodlights will be upgraded with new LED fittings. Dressing rooms, players’ areas, toilets and the playing turf have been renovated as per international standards.
