Chhattisgarh is known for its rich flora and fauna. This time, in a moment of absolute pride for the state, a reservoir has been declared a Ramsar site. This is the state’s first-ever Ramsar site. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai took to X on Friday to declare this momentous occasion and even called it a “moment of immense pride”. So, which is the state’s first such wetland to receive this recognition? Read on!

Chhattisgarh’s Kopra Reservoir Declared Ramsar Site

Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai announced on X on Friday that Kopra Reservoir in Bilaspur is the state’s first Ramsar site. He revealed that the global recognition honours the state’s rich bird habitat-diversity, water conservation efforts and biodiversity. Moreover, he thanked the State Wetland Authority. What’s interesting to note is that Kopra Reservoir is under the state’s goal of Chhattisgarh Anjor Vision 2047.

This vision comes with the objective of Chhattisgarh obtaining Ramsar status for 20 wetlands by the year 2030. Kopra Reservoir in Bilaspur district has kick-started the state’s initiative. As per CM Vishnu Deo Sai, this achievement will open new doors of opportunities for local employment and eco-tourism. Moreover, he hopes that the Ramsar recognition will strengthen public awareness in the state towards wetland conservation. He humbly urged citizens to play an active role in protecting the state’s invaluable natural heritage.

A Wetland Known For Its Migratory Birds

Ramsar sites are essentially wetlands of global significance designated under the Ramsar Convention, which has its headquarters in Gland, Switzerland. Kopra Reservoir is a beautiful blend of natural and man-made features. It’s a vital hub for irrigation, biodiversity and water resources in the region. As per a study published in the ‘6th International Conference on Environment and Ecology’, the Kopra Reservoir has 161 species, belonging to 19 orders and 50 families. There are migratory birds, fish, amphibians, shrimps, grubs, molluscs and more.

The wetland, which is now a Ramsar site, is perfect for birding and eco-tourism.
