A Mumbai-based bakery recently exposed a bizarre case of AI misuse after a customer allegedly tried to secure a refund using an AI-generated cake photo! This incident has sparked a wider conversation about how people are widely using artificial intelligence to fake food images. It has also highlighted the need for people to stay vigilant in the era of hyper-realistic AI visuals.
Customer Tries To Get ₹1,820 Refund With AI Cake Photo
Recently, a Mumbai-based dessert chain, Dessert Therapy, revealed in an Instagram post that a customer attempted to use an AI-generated cake photo to falsely claim a refund on a Zomato order. According to the post, the customer, Aditi Singh, placed a cake order via Zomato.
She later shared an AI cake picture to report a complaint on the platform. “The cake had chocolate spillage all over as if the cake had fallen from one side,” she said in the complaint and demanded a refund of ₹1,820.
They mentioned that this isn’t the first time they have encountered a situation like this. Pointing out the issues with the doctored cake image, they mentioned that “ChatGPT couldn’t get the strawberries, the birthday tag, and the consistency of the cream right.” The bakery then urged all restaurant owners to stay alert to avoid such issues.

How To Identify AI Food Pictures & Videos?
In light of the AI cake incident, we’ve put together a few tips to help you spot doctored food photos and videos:
1. The most obvious giveaway is when the food looks unnatural or unrealistic.
2. AI-generated images often have “perfect” lighting.
3. These photos often display odd, distorted, or inconsistent lettering.
4. Check for hand placement. AI-generated images often have missing thumbs, fingers, or awkward portions.
5. In AI food pictures, there are unrealistic perfections like too-perfect piping on cakes, portions, and layers.
6. Sometimes, the vegetables or fruits in the images appear oddly sized or disproportionate.
