Mumbai local train commuters, this is for you. You may soon be able to shop for vegetables, groceries, meals or many other daily essentials while on your way back home from railway stations. Indian Railways is planning something big to help daily commuters cut down on that extra trip to a store. Here’s what we know.
Mumbai Local Stations May Get Shops, Cafes & More
The Indian Railways is now planning to monetise vacant spaces on elevated station decks and areas above foot overbridges at some of the busiest suburban stations in Mumbai. According to Hindustan Times, this space will be used to set up small shops, retail outlets, restaurants, cafes, grocery and vegetable stores. Commuters on the local trains will be able to shop directly from these shops instead of having to make an additional trip to a market or outside railway stations.
The proposal is not just aimed at turning underutilised spaces into retail spaces for commuters but also at generating revenue for the Indian Railways through licence fees or rentals. Now, let’s talk about which suburban stations may be considered for this initiative. Reportedly, Andheri, Borivali, Khar Road and Mira Road are among the top stations that are in talks in the initial phase. These four stations are known for high passenger footfall and large elevated deck areas.

How Will These Shops Benefit Commuters?
According to Hindustan Times, the Western Railway has begun identifying potential categories of operators. This includes established restaurant and cafe chains, flea markets, grocery stores, vegetable and fruit stores, and even coaching classes.
This means that commuters on the Mumbai local trains are in for some great benefits. Instead of ordering online or going to a shop, many office-goers will be able to shop for vegetables and groceries for dinner after getting off. They will also be able to eat a meal at a restaurant and even shop for other essentials. The proposal is still in the initial stages. Authorities will have to do several safety and operational checks before going ahead.
