Good news! Mumbai is all set to see a much-improved suburban network. Indian Railways has now undertaken multiple projects worth over ₹16,200 crore for the city. These aim to enhance connectivity and make train operations a lot more seamless. Plus, they might also introduce local AC trains with automatic doors as well.
Govt. Approves ₹16,241 Crore For Mumbai Local Train Services
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has written to the Lok Sabha stating that the government has now approved 12 infrastructure projects worth ₹16,241 crore. As per a report by The Indian Express, the project is aimed at enhancing the suburban railway services in Mumbai. The statement came as a response to a query raised by Congress MP Sasikanth Senthil.
A few months ago, Ashwini Vaishnaw had emphasised the importance of developing infrastructure to support the increasing suburban services. He also stated that Indian Railways has always been committed to modernising operations, improving the commuter experience, and making regional travel smoother. This new project especially focuses on Mumbai, which sees a high passenger footfall.

12 Key Projects to Ease Regional Travel
As per The Indian Express, these projects aim to decongest existing lines, improve the frequency of services, and cater to the growing demands from Mumbai’s daily commuters. The 12 Mumbai suburban railway projects include:
- CSMT–Kurla 5th and 6th Line (MUTP-II), 17.5 km, ₹891 crore
- Mumbai Central–Borivali 6th Line (MUTP-II), 30 km, ₹919 crore
- Extension of the Harbour Line from Goregaon-Borivali (MUTP-IIIA), 7km, ₹826 crore
- Borivali-Virar 5th & 6th Line (MUTP-IIIA), 26km, ₹2,184 crore
- Virar-Dahanu Road 3rd & 4th Line (MUTP-III), 64km, ₹3,587 crore
- Panvel-Karjat Suburban Corridor (MUTP-III), 29.6km, ₹2,782 crore
- Airoli-Kalwa (elevated) Suburban Corridor link (MUTP-III), 3.3km, ₹476 crore
- Kalyan-Asangaon 4th Line (MUTP-IIIA), 32km, ₹1,759 crore
- Kalyan-Badlapur 3rd & 4th line (MUTP-IIIA), 14km, ₹1,510 crore
- Kalyan-Kasara 3rd Line, 67km, ₹793 crore
- Naigaon-Juichandra double chord Line, 6km, ₹176 crore
- Nilaje-Kopar double chord Line, 5km, ₹338 crore
Apart from these new projects, Mumbai may also see 238 new air-conditioned suburban rakes. These AC local trains will come equipped with automatic doors specially designed to prevent passengers from hanging on the footboards, a major cause of accidents.
