Mumbai To Surat Suburban Trains May Soon Become A Reality; Here’s What We Know So Far

Soon, commuters might be able to travel to Surat from Mumbai on local trains. Authorities are now exploring suburban train-type services between these two destinations as a long-term plan. If this becomes a reality, it could provide significant relief to thousands of daily commuters. Here’s what we know so far.

Local Trains Planned Between Mumbai & Surat

Local or suburban trains might soon run between Mumbai and Surat. According to The Times of India, instead of conventional suburban EMU locals, these services will most likely rely on MEMU trains (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit). These trains are better suited for longer intercity distances and come equipped with passenger amenities like toilets. 

According to Hindustan Times, Western Railway is planning to construct new platforms to accommodate suburban trains at Surat Railway Station. Once these platforms are ready, there will also be scope to operate local trains from Surat to Valsad, Dahanu, and Virar, as well as towards Ahmedabad. 

Namo Bharat trains, which have a mix of AC and non-AC coaches, can be considered for suburban services. These trains are known for their high speed, comfortable seating, and modern amenities. It should be noted that Western Railway already operates a Namo Bharat service between Ahmedabad and Bhuj.

Namo Bharat & MEMU Trains To Be Used

Reportedly, According to Hindustan Times, the main issue with running longer local trains is the non-availability of toilets, which can be inconvenient for passengers. For journeys on EMU (Electrical Multiple Units), travel beyond three hours is not practical. That is why Namo Bharat and upgraded Mainline EMU trains are being considered. These trains will make it possible to connect these cities with a suburban system.

You will also like to know that Western Railway already runs MEMU trains between Virar and Surat, which take more than five hours with around 30 halts. If such a suburban service is introduced between Mumbai and Surat, it will benefit thousands of daily commuters, especially small business owners. Moreover, it could help reduce road traffic congestion and overall travel time between these cities.
