Mumbai’s Borivali-Virar Rail Project Reaches 30% Progress, Completion Due By 2029

The Borivali-Virar 5th and 6th Lines Project has reached around 30% physical progress, with the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd. (MRVC) aiming to complete the major rail capacity augmentation project by 2029. Read on to know more.

Borivali-Virar Line Project To Be Completed By 2029

As per a report by Mid-Day, the project, being built under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-IIIA (MUTP-IIIA) along the Western Railway suburban corridor, was sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹2,184 crore. Authorities stated that substantial progress has been made on land acquisition, statutory approvals and civil construction.

Around 11.929 hectares of salt pan land at Umelman in Vasai has been handed over for the project, while processes for acquiring the remaining land are underway. Forest and mangrove clearances have also been secured. Civil construction has picked up pace at multiple locations along the corridor. According to MRVC officials, the relocation of railway structures at Dahisar, Mira Road, Bhayander, Naigaon, Nallasopara and Vasai Road has either been completed or is at an advanced stage.

Work on the construction and modification of foot overbridges (FOBs) and platforms at Dahisar, Naigaon and Nallasopara is also progressing. Construction is currently underway on three major bridges, three minor bridges and one road overbridge (ROB), along with the associated earthwork. Work on Bridge Nos. 73 and 75 is also progressing, with foundation and fabrication activities underway. MRVC said around 1.30 lakh cubic metres of earthwork has been completed along the Bridge No. 75-Naigaon and Panju Island stretches. Another earthwork package has seen approximately 70,000 cubic metres completed.

Project To Increase Rail Capacity Between Borivali And Virar

The Borivali-Virar section is among the busiest stretches of the Western Railway suburban network. The addition of the fifth and sixth lines is aimed at increasing the corridor’s overall capacity and allowing better separation of suburban and other train services.

Sunil G. Udasi, Chief Manager, Corporate Coordination, MRVC, said the additional lines will provide much-needed capacity on the heavily utilised corridor and help improve the segregation of different train services.

MRVC is working with Western Railway and other authorities to advance the project. At the same time, efforts are continuing pending land acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) and statutory requirements to keep the project on track for its 2029 completion target.
