Pithoragarh, one of Uttarakhand’s quieter and most scenic hill districts, has added a brand-new reason for travellers to visit: the region’s first dedicated astro-tourism observatory. The observatory is a big step towards turning stargazing into a worthwhile Himalayan travel experience. It was designed to bring together local communities, science, and tourism.

Pithoragarh Gets Its First Astro-Tourism Observatory

The observatory has been set up by the District Tourism Department, Pithoragarh, and executed by Starscapes Experiences Pvt Ltd, a leading name in astro-tourism in India. It was formally inaugurated by Satpal Maharaj, Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Uttarakhand, in the presence of senior district officials, including the District Magistrate, Mayor of Pithoragarh and the District Tourism Development Officer.

Pithoragarh is blessed with naturally dark skies, which is certainly something rare in today’s world. Far away from big cities and heavy light pollution, the district’s high altitude and clean air make it an ideal spot to observe stars, planets and celestial events. This natural advantage is what makes the new observatory so special.

The project doesn’t just use the night sky as a background but as the main focus. The astro-tourism observatory will let the visitors take part in educational programmes, astronomy classes, and guided night sky observations from a dedicated stargazing area.

Strengthening Science-Led Tourism In Uttarakhand

What makes the initiative truly meaningful is its focus on local participation. Locals have received training from Starscapes to become Astro Guides, who will run the observatory and perform night sky shows. These tour guides have received training in astronomy, telescope operation, planet and constellation explanations, and visitor interaction.

The idea of promoting astro-tourism in Uttarakhand has been discussed for a long time, and seeing it take shape in Pithoragarh is a moment of pride, according to Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj, who spoke at the inauguration. He emphasised that the observatory will not only promote scientific thinking but also create new tourism and employment opportunities for hill communities.

The state government also plans to construct similar observatories at other suitable locations in Uttarakhand in order to improve the foundation for astrotourism throughout the region. According to Kirti Chandra Arya, District Tourism Development Officer, Pithoragarh, the district’s dark skies offer immense potential. The administration hopes to establish Pithoragarh as a responsible and sustainable tourism destination where the advantages directly benefit the local community.

This new astro-tourism observatory will make Pithoragarh a must-visit location at a time when tourists are choosing significant experiences.
