Maharashtra has now taken a decision to demolish certain highway dhabas and eateries within the Right of Way (ROW) on any National Highway within 60 days. This decision has been taken based on the directions given by the Supreme Court in April 2026. Here’s what we know so far and what it means for travellers.
Maharashtra To Demolish Illegal Highway Dhabas
In a crackdown against all unauthorised structures within the Right of Way (ROW) on any National Highway, the Maharashtra government has asked all urban bodies in the state to demolish unlicensed structures within 60 days. This applies to both new and existing structures. According to The Indian Express, the order also prohibits the construction of any dhaba or commercial space on the ROW. For the unversed, the ROW is the total strip of land acquired and reserved by the government.
The decision was taken on the directions given by the Supreme Court on April 13, 2026. The National Highways Authority of India, all municipal corporations, municipal councils and nagar panchayats have been asked to strictly follow these orders.

What This Means For Travellers?
According to The Indian Express, the new order also states that no department, authority or local body shall grant or renew any licence for any site within the highway safety zones. Moreover, all existing licences for such sites will be reviewed within 30 days.
Apparently, many dhabas let trucks park illegally on the roadside, which can block views and cause accidents. But dhabas with legal licences and permissions, and which are located safely away from the road, should not worry. The government has no plans to demolish them.
As a traveller, if you are planning a road trip through Maharashtra, you can expect to see fewer small food shops or tea stalls along the highways. You will need to rely on legal and authorised food courts for your refreshments and to take a break. This new rule also means that a traveller may experience fewer traffic jams and fewer poorly parked trucks on the roads.
