A Chennai Metro train experienced a technical glitch on Tuesday morning. About 25 commuters were left stranded in an underground tunnel as the train stopped midway. The commuters were made to walk through the tunnel, and the video is now going viral. Netizens are bashing the authorities, calling it a serious safety issue. Here’s what happened.
Chennai Metro Train Gets Stuck Between Stations
According to a report by The Times of India, about 25 commuters were stuck inside a Chennai Metro train on Tuesday morning. The train got stuck inside a tunnel between the Central and High Court stations, leaving passengers stranded. Authorities had to later evacuate them from the metro. Reportedly, the incident happened on the metro system’s Blue Line, which runs between the Wimco Nagar Depot and Chennai International Airport.
But the metro getting stuck was not the only issue. According to a report by NDTV, there was no electricity and the passengers were basically trapped inside. Just after ten minutes, an announcement was made asking passengers to walk to the nearby metro station, which is the High Court station. It was around 500 metres away. A video posted by an X user, @TatvikOm, is also going viral. It shows passengers queuing up and walking through an underground tunnel to escape.
The X user wrote, “No power. Poor ventilation. This is not a minor glitch. This is a serious safety wake-up call for Chennai Metro Rail Limited. Public transport = public trust. Don’t break it.”
A Scary Walk In The Tunnel
This is not just about no electricity and a metro getting stuck. Imagine walking through a dark tunnel in the morning. It is indeed scary, and do not forget that there is absolutely no ventilation either. According to a report by NDTV, the disruption was caused by a power outage or a technical glitch.
The official X page of Chennai Metro Rail also posted later, informing that the metro train was halted between High Court station and Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Metro Station. They also added that immediate evacuation was done, and the train was withdrawn from the line. The authorities also wrote, “Normal operations have resumed at 06.20 AM. We regret the inconvenience caused.”
