Mangoes are expensive, especially certain varieties like Alphonso, Noor Jahan, Kesar, and more. But did you know about the world’s most expensive mango? It is the Japanese Miyazaki mango, also known as the ‘Egg of the Sun’, which is native to Japan. But recently, a farmer from Odisha was successful in growing this variety, which sells for ₹3 lakh per kg, but now he does not know what to do with it.
Odisha Farmer Grows Rare Japanese Miyazaki Mango
A farmer, Deba Padhiami, in Malkangiri district, Odisha, has successfully grown the rare Miyazaki mango, which is often described as one of the world’s most expensive mango varieties. The fruit, famously known as the ‘Egg of the Sun’, has a flaming red-purple skin, fibreless buttery texture, and extreme sweetness. The price of these mangoes can almost touch ₹2.5-₹3 lakh per kg. The Miyazaki mango originates from Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture and is considered a luxury produce in Japan.
Deba Padhiami might have successfully grown the expensive mango, but has no idea how to sell it. According to The Economic Times, the farmer received the sapling nearly four years ago from a social worker. After years of nurturing the plant in Odisha’s difficult climate, the tree finally started producing fruit. His small orchard has apparently received a lot of attention in the region. Many people are visiting his orchards to see these unique mangoes.
Farmer Guards The Rare Mangoes At Night
According to The Economic Times, Deba is now scared that someone might steal these rare mangoes from the tree and all his hard work will go to waste. This is why he has started sleeping near the tree at night to guard them. Moreover, this fruit is auctioned at extremely high prices. This is why the farmer is struggling with how to sell them. He has very little information about pricing, packaging, transport, and buyers who are willing to pay huge amounts of money for Miyazaki mangoes.
These mangoes are sold at extraordinary prices in Japan, but those rates are also linked to strict cultivation standards, branding, and export quality. India does not yet have proper marketing and supply chains for these mangoes, so they might not be sold for lakhs here. Currently, Deba is protecting the fruit hanging from his tree while thinking about what to do with it.
