BMC To Upgrade Powai Lake
As per a report by Mid-day, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is nearing completion of its plan for a sewage-free Powai Lake. The civic body is now preparing the area for visitors with a new ₹1.1 crore upgrade. The next phase of development will focus on improving the lake precinct area with modern public amenities, including better lighting, benches, and a public address system.

The new development will involve a public address system, used for performances, speeches and announcements. Illumination across key spots around the lake and benches at designated safe locations for visitors. Earlier this year, the BMC started the work to stop sewage from entering the lake by laying pipelines to divert waste to the Bhandup wastewater treatment facility. According to the news portal, the officials have informed the residents of the area that they will complete the entire diversion work by May 2026. The target for completion is set for May 2026, and in the long term, the civic body also plans to build a dedicated sewage treatment plant in Powai.
What Do The Residents Have To Say?
The residents of the Powai area informed the news portal that they were briefed on the progress earlier this month. On March 16, they met with BMC officials and observed the pipeline work designed to divert sewage to Bhandup. They were further assured that the work will be completed by May 2026, Pamela Cheena, chairperson of the Powai Advanced Locality Management, said.

Powai Lake is spread over 223 hectares and is a major wetland, according to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. However, around 18 million litres of untreated wastewater were flowing into the lake daily, lowering oxygen levels and threatening its biodiversity. The Powai Lake is also home to several species, including crocodiles etc,
