With the mango season here, demand for the fruit and its related dishes is soaring. To meet this demand, some market players resort to adulterated and fake products, and one such case recently came to light in Pune. A unit of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seized and destroyed 3,800 kg of fake mango pulp in the city and here’s all you need to know about it.

According to The Times of India, a Pune unit of the FDA destroyed over 3,800 kg of adulterated mango pulp during raids across parts of the district. The report states that the manufacturing unit was located in Urse village in Maval taluka. During the inspection, officials found that the pulp was being made using unauthorised food colours and substances not permitted under food safety regulations.

The FDA team seized and destroyed 3,282.9 kg of mango pulp, flagging the facility for serious violations. Samples of the pulp, raw mangoes, and additives have been collected and sent for testing. According to the FDA report, the additives used included sugar, cow’s milk, and a saffron-coloured liquid solution.

In a separate investigation, FDA officials in Pune raided a unit in Khed and seized 558 kg of mango pulp valued at ₹61,380. Combined with the earlier raid, the total seizure rose to around 3,800 kg of mango pulp worth ₹2.23 lakh.

NDTV reported that the raids were conducted under the supervision of senior FDA officials, including Assistant Commissioner N. R. Sarkate and Commissioner Shridhar Dube Patil, along with a team of food safety officers. Joint Commissioner (Food), Pune division, D. V. Bhogawade, said that strict action against violators will continue.
