It is getting colder in Delhi. Residents once again woke up to thick fog and biting cold conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now issued a ‘red’ warning for the capital on Tuesday morning. Due to low visibility, several airlines have issued travel advisories, cautioning passengers about possible flight delays, diversions, and cancellations. Here’s everything you need to know.
Dense Fog In Delhi Disrupts Flights
Dense fog has severely disrupted air, road, and rail networks not just in Delhi, but across many parts of north India. The fog, which had already disrupted air travel on Monday, became denser by Tuesday morning, prompting the IMD to issue a red alert for the city. According to a report by Business Today, the warning will remain in effect until Tuesday afternoon.
Visibility has dropped sharply across the city. On Monday, at least 128 flights were cancelled due to poor runway visibility. Flight cancellations and delays are likely to continue today as well. On Monday night, IndiGo took to its X account and wrote that dense fog conditions could impact flight operations. The airline assured passengers that it is closely monitoring the weather every minute. Travellers were advised to check their flight status before leaving for the airport. IndiGo also offered passengers the option to claim a refund in case their flight is cancelled.

SpiceJet & Air India Also Issue Advisories
SpiceJet also issued a travel advisory for December 30. The airline warned that both departing and arriving flights could be affected due to bad weather conditions in Delhi. Passengers were advised to keep a close check on their flight status.
Air India, too, shared an update on X and wrote, “Weather forecast continues to indicate dense fog for tomorrow morning with significantly reduced visibility at Delhi and parts of northern India. This will affect flight schedules to and from Delhi with cascading effects likely across our network.” The airline asked travellers to use its ‘Fog Care’ initiative, which allows them to receive timely alerts about their flights. The service also gives passengers the option to reschedule or seek full refunds on flights impacted by fog.
Delhi Airport also posted an update on social media, stating that visibility has improved at the airport. However, passengers were still advised to check the latest flight schedules with their respective airlines before heading out.
Dense fog has clearly impacted air travel in the city. Authorities are working to manage the situation. However, fog is not the only concern. According to a report by The Times of India, Delhi’s air quality has disrupted traffic movement across the city. The AQI stood at 390, placing it in the ‘very poor’ category.
If you are travelling anywhere, make sure to check your flight status before stepping out of your home. Stay safe.
