After an unusually hot start to March, Delhi finally got some relief on Sunday. Sudden rain showers and thunderstorms brought temperatures down significantly, while cool breezes offered much-needed respite to residents. But what caused this sudden dip in temperature? Let’s find out.
Delhi Woke Up To Rain & Breezy Weather On Sunday
On Sunday morning, Delhi and its surrounding regions witnessed rain, lightning, and strong winds after experiencing one of the hottest first weeks of March in nearly 50 years. According to NDTV, the temperature recorded at the Safdarjung Weather Station in Delhi was around 22°C on Sunday morning.
The India Meteorological Department had earlier forecast thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and possible hailstorms in the western Himalayas and adjoining plains on Sunday and Monday. An orange alert was also issued for Delhi. On Monday, the maximum temperature is likely to remain between 28°C and 31°C. The minimum temperatures will be around 14°C to 16°C–much cooler compared to previous days in this month.

What’s Causing The Sudden Dip In Temperature?
So, what’s behind this sudden dip in temperature in the region? According to India Today, a series of western disturbances, low-pressure systems that originate over the Mediterranean Sea, triggered unexpected rain, thunderstorms, and cooler weather in Delhi NCR, bringing what many described as a brief return of spring.
The IMD also noted that another western disturbance is expected to affect northwest India from the night of March 17, which could extend the cooling trend. Weather experts say this development may help the country avoid a severe heatwave until mid-to-late April.
Rain and snowfall are also likely in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand over the coming days. Meanwhile, the system may bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to Assam, with intense showers also expected in West Bengal, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.
