Football fever has taken over across India, prompting several state governments to declare a holiday for schools and colleges on July 20 so students can watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final without worrying about attending classes the next morning. Kerala Declares Holiday After FIFA World Cup Final

As per a report by Telegraph India, states like Kerala, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Manipur have all declared the closure of schools, colleges and higher educational institutions, owing to the immense popularity of football and the late-night kickoff of the title match between defending champions Argentina and Spain.

In Kerala, the rule came after students appealed to the government, claiming it would be difficult to attend classes after staying up to watch the final, which was planned to end around 2.30 am or even later if the match went into extra time or penalties. General Education Minister N. Samsudheen confirmed the holiday for schools, while Higher Education Minister Roji M. John announced a day off for colleges and professional institutions. Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan described Kerala’s passion for football as “unmatched” and claimed that the move would allow young fans to enjoy the tournament’s biggest match without academic concerns.

Other States To Join The Celebration

As per the news portal, Meghalaya also declared a holiday for all educational institutions, with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stating that the decision recognised the state’s deep love for football and requests from students eager to watch the final.

In Mizoram, the state government announced a holiday for schools, colleges and other educational institutions, while government offices will function only in the afternoon. Chief Minister Lalduhoma said football holds a special place in Mizo culture and pointed out the sporting talent among the state’s youth. Several private schools also joined the initiative by declaring a holiday.

The Manipur government also announced the closure of all schools, colleges, universities and higher educational institutions affiliated with state and national education boards, including CBSE, for the day.

The FIFA World Cup final was held on 19th July, with Spain winning the title.
