Indian street food isn’t just mouth-watering and soul-satisfying, it has also historically been easy on the pocket. From quick bites to hearty meals, you could always enjoy a filling spread without burning a hole in your wallet, with plenty of options to choose from. However, a recent survey suggests that Indian street food is no longer as affordable as it once was. Scroll on to know more about this.

Is Street Food Getting Expensive In India?

LocalCircles, a community social media platform, found in a recent survey that foodies who visited street vendors in the past week reported price increases of up to 25%. The survey found that around 57% of consumers reported a significant rise in prices at restaurants and online food delivery platforms over the past week.

The sharpest increase was observed in online orders. Meanwhile, about 54% of Indians who visited street food vendors during the same period also confirmed a noticeable price hike. As per Moneycontrol, rising cooking fuel costs amid the ongoing West Asian conflict have led roadside eateries, small vendors, and restaurants to pass on part of the burden to customers, at least temporarily.

Here’s What The Survey Says…

The survey found that many eateries across India have already hiked menu prices or introduced a temporary LPG surcharge on customer bills. This, they say, is aimed at offsetting rising fuel costs and the irregular supply of commercial cylinders.

According to Moneycontrol, some restaurants have started adding ₹15 or more as an “LPG revision fee” to customer bills to offset rising cooking fuel costs. The increase in street food prices across India is largely driven by the fact that vendors and small eateries rely on commercial LPG cylinders, which require frequent refilling.

Amid the ongoing LPG crisis, many vendors are now either scaling down operations or temporarily shutting their stalls due to the rising costs and supply disruptions. Overall, street food in India is definitely more expensive than usual.
