Many people rely on beauty creams, facials and antioxidant-rich foods to slow down ageing and look youthful. But did you know that visiting museums, art galleries, theatres and concerts may also help slow down biological ageing and reduce stress? Yes! A new study suggests exactly that.
Visiting Museums & Art Galleries May Keep You Biologically Young
If you are someone who enjoys visiting museums and theatres as a hobby, then this is definitely good news for you. These cultural experiences can stimulate the brain, encourage social interaction and reduce stress. And no, we are not making this up. This finding is backed by a study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.
The researchers analysed data from 1,899 adults aged 50 years and above. They examined how often the participants visited museums, art galleries, theatres, concerts and other cultural venues. They then compared these habits with markers of biological and physiological ageing.

How Cultural Activities Can Help Reduce Stress?
According to the study, people who visited museums, theatres or regularly took part in cultural activities had a younger biological age than those who did not. The most culturally engaged participants had an average physiological age of 66.9 years, while those with low cultural engagement had an average physiological age of 69.9 years.
You should know that biological age is different from chronological age. Chronological age is simply the number of years you have lived, while biological age reflects how well your body is functioning. Researchers believe these cultural activities can support healthier ageing by keeping the brain active.
Whether you are exploring an art gallery or watching a play, you are stimulating your brain, which may help maintain cognitive function. Moreover, many cultural activities are also linked to lower stress levels, which can improve emotional wellbeing and help keep you happier.
