On Thursday, the Department of Immigration and Emigration made an official announcement. Tourists visiting Sri Lanka, known for its scenic beaches, hills, and rich culture, will no longer be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival. ETA is a pre-screening system used for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to countries like Sri Lanka, Australia, and the UK. The rule for obtaining an ETA was earlier implemented by the department on October 15 for short-stay visitors.

As per a report by The Financial Express, the new directive states that all ETA and visa issuance services will continue to operate under the previous procedures until further notice. This means travellers can now apply for visas as per the rules that were in effect before October 15.

Sri Lanka Eyes 5 Lakh Indian Tourists In 2025

According to The Financial Express, the decision to withdraw the ETA rule comes as Sri Lanka aims to attract 5 lakh Indian tourists in 2025. The country is also working hard towards expanding its wedding and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism. Sri Lanka hopes to see more tourists from India. Reportedly, many Indians are showing an increased interest in destinations beyond Colombo and Bentota, particularly the highlands and the Ramayana Trails, which hold deep significance for Indian travellers.

Rolling back the ETA rule is part of Sri Lanka’s broader tourism plan. By going back to the previous visa procedures, travellers, especially Indians, will face one less step while planning their trip to the country. This move is expected to make travel easier and smoother for Indians.

You would also like to know that Sri Lanka continues to see many visitors arriving from India.
